Raw Art: Combined With Holiday Behaviours, Expectations And Reality ...

Summer holidays come with so many expectations. A lack of routine is a relief and a challenge all at once. The sound of children constantly whacking, thwacking, clicking and bumping is tiring. I am sick of the sound of my own voice but I am also grateful to have the time to share in activities which are not possible at other times of the year.

I am fortunate to be the current recipient of the book Raw Art Journaling, which is a part of the second year of Pass the Book organised by Melissa. The book came way of Rinda and when she first offered it I jumped at the chance to investigate more of this art medium ..... because, as most of you know, I am not a 'free spirited' creator.

I have been inspired by this book in many ways. There were aspects that were applicable to all journalers and photographers and indeed anyone who enjoys any form of art. Personally, I have taken away several ideas that will likely stay with me throughout my little journey, but, I found this book an excellent source of holiday crafting ideas for children.

One particular hot day saw us taking refuge inside to create art journals. To encourage the children, we decided on a theme: summer. One child chose to illustrate highlights of their summer experience thus far and another child wanted to record a particular couple of days which were important. I found this activity to be a great way to engage the children and, considering their ages, they worked away quietly for nearly two hours.

I am ready to Pass the Book. Let me know if you would like the chance to receive Raw Art Journaling in the comments section. Please don't feel as though you need to have some experience with this medium, I had none and the book has offered me many snippets of inspiration. More than anything, this book is about journaling, of course there are many techniques that cover ways to journal in an artistic manner, but the principles are applicable to anyone who likes to include writing in their art/hobby.

Leave a comment and I'll draw a winner on Monday.

Love the kids' work and that they were engrossed in it for that long. My journaling could definitely use some inspiration so please put me in the drawing.

So glad to hear that you liked it and found it inspiring. Children can be so free with art - I love that.
Rinda (who doesn't need to go in the drawing - LOL!)

Holidays, or the transitions into and out of them, are a big challenge here for my boy. A great way of engaging your children in arty activities. I remember those days fondly, neither of mine need the slightest encouragement to get drawing now :o) It looks like a book I would be eager to read Amy. Thanks for the opportunity.

I've never been a very consistent journal keeper, though I have tried many times. I just purchased the Five Year Journal which requires just one or two sentences at the end of the day. I'm finding it quite easy to maintain, and I'm fascinated by the idea of keeping it for five years. I'll pass on the book right now as there are quite a few projects coming up in the next month or two. Perhaps I'll have a chance at it again later on. I love what I can see of the children's art!

Love that you worked journals with your children. Posts like this make all those questions I had when I was writing it disappear! Thanks for passing it along--what a great idea.
